5 Signs Your Tree Might Be Dangerous (and When to Call a Pro)

September 2, 2025

Trees around Salt Lake are great for shade and curb appeal. But here’s the thing—sometimes a tree can turn into a real problem, and you don’t notice until it’s too late. One heavy branch or a leaning trunk can cause serious damage if it comes down in a storm.

Here are a few warning signs to watch for:

1. Your tree is leaning more than before

A little lean is normal. But if it looks like the lean has gotten worse—or it started after a storm—that’s trouble. It usually means the roots are weak or the ground shifted.

2. Cracks in the trunk or big branches

If you see deep splits, peeling bark, or cracks running down the trunk, that’s where the tree will likely give out when the wind picks up.

3. Dead or hanging branches

Branches that are dry, brittle, or dangling loosely can drop anytime. Doesn’t matter if it’s windy or calm—they come down when they want to.

4. Fungus or rot at the base

Mushrooms growing near the trunk or soft, squishy wood at the bottom usually mean the inside is rotting. By the time you see it, the tree is already weak.

5. Damage after a storm

Snow, wind, or lightning can mess with even a strong tree. If the soil around the roots looks cracked or lifted, that tree might be on its way down.

When to Call a Pro:

If you notice even one of these signs, don’t wait it out. A falling branch—or worse, a whole tree—can do serious damage.

That’s where we come in. At Noble Tree Service, we check trees all over Salt Lake and let you know if it’s safe to keep or better to take down. And if it needs work, we’ll handle it so you don’t have to risk it.
